Humble Pie
Kari Lynn
"Food for the heart," they called him--
"On account of you being so starved for so long."
Well, if he was food for my heart,
I ate him whole.
Devoured him, took him into my mouth
in great gulping swallows.
His complements slid past my pink lips--open, waiting--
and straight to my heart,
Which immediately grew fat on the rich sweet treats.
"Sweet Nothings", indeed.
Oh, I ate him, alright,
my hungry soul sucking at him,
Slurping and licking loudly,
relishing the taste and demanding more.
And now I am full, and fat, and he is gone,
And there is naught left to eat but so much
Humble Pie.
